This is the site of the original Turk - the first ever built. In 2020 it was upgraded to a fully insulated and double glazed model that is fully consented (unlike the original which had none of these benefits). The site has excellent cellphone reception and excellent views overlooking the Wakatipu basin. There are many ways to access the Turk, the first three being the most popular.
  • From the Glencoe Station Road find the Bracken Saddle Track and continue up past the saddle along the 4wd track to Crown Peak. The Turk can be seen in the basin 2km to the north below Mt Sale. Continue along the 4wd track towards Mt Sale leaving it and traversing to the Turk from where it starts to climb to again. 3 hours
  • Start as above but about 500m after Bracken Saddle leave the 4wd track and follow an old water race to the east. Drop into the stream draining the Crown Basin (not actually named but the basin between Mt Sale and Crown Peak) and continue up the spur on the other side. When you crest the ridge at 1350 metres you can see the Turk in front of you. 3.5 hours
  • From the Crown Range Road Saddle head north west over Mt Scott and along to Crown Peak. See the first route for more details. 3 hours
  • From Coal Creek join the track along the ridge at 1600 metres
  • From Cardrona ski area traverse the ridge to Mt Sale
A combination of the first three routes leads to an enjoyable trip
